East Texas sisters spread joy to senior living residents through handmade crafts

Pat Florence said their mom and dad used to live at The Hamptons before they passed away back in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

TYLER, Texas — Three sisters have taken it upon themselves to brighten the lives of residents at the senior living facility where they happily spent the final years of their lives, The Hamptons of Tyler.

Once a month, sisters Pat Florence, Debbie Miller, and Cathy Zimmerman, who are known as the Sunshine Sisters, come to The Hamptons of Tyler with craft supplies and snacks. They lead a popular 10-to-12-person craft group.

Florence said their mom and dad used to live at The Hamptons before they passed away back in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

“Well, all three of us girls are kind of craftsy. Our mom was always into crafts, and so I guess that’s where all three of us kind of got it. We wanted to share what we have, the talents, if you call it that, with other people,” Florence said.

The sisters come out to The Hamptons every second Monday of the month to give back and bring joy to the residents.

“The Sunshine Sisters are wonderful. We have a really good time with them, and they always have good projects for us to do,” resident Judy Lippert said.

Florence said the craft projects are fulfilling for both the sister trio and the residents.

“They look forward to it, and we look forward to it. We’re all retired, and we just have a compassion for elderly people. Of course, we’re elderly ourselves. We know how important it is for them to have the companionship and the camaraderie ship and that fellowship. It’s that togetherness,” Florence said.

She said she and her sisters are always encouraging to the residents as they make their art. Florence added that people should share their talents with those around them.

“We just want to tell everybody, get out there and share what you have. Talk to somebody. Everybody’s lonely, and then everybody needs somebody, so please get out there and share your smile,” Florence said.
