East Texas soldier killed in training accident in Hungary

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — A soldier from East Texas was killed in a training accident near Camp Croft, Hungary on Thursday.

The 101st Airborne Division said Sgt. Aaron Cox, 24, of Mabank, was assigned to the “Strike” 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team. He died as a result of wounds from a vehicle accident during preparations for the upcoming Exercise Saber Guardian 25, in Hungary.

“The loss of Sgt. Cox is a tragedy for all of us on the Strike team,” said, Col. Duke Reim, commander, 2MBCT, 101st Airborne Div. “He was a strong Soldier and leader, who quickly rose through the ranks while serving.  We are in direct contact with his family, for care and support that they need during this difficult time. We would like to thank our Hungarian Allies for their prompt response and support to our Soldiers.” 

Cox joined the army in 2021, and arrived at Fort Campbell in 2022 after his training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He graduated from the Army Basic Leader Course and the Combat Lifesaver Course.

This was his second deployment after previously being deployed in Poland in 2022.

The 101st Airborne Division said at 1:00 p.m. Central European Time on Thursday, soldiers were involved in a vehicle rollover accident while conducting regularly scheduled training. Cox was evacuated by helicopter to a local hospital from the site of the accident, but later died. Another soldier was hospitalized with serious injuries and is now in stable condition.

The remaining soldiers were taken to a medical facility for monitoring and have returned to duty.

Local Hungarian authorities and the Army Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the incident.
