CARTHAGE, Texas — A baby deer is safe thanks to the kindness of an East Texas woman who helped nurse the fawn back to health.
Blair Cope was going through the Carthage High School parking lot when she saw a tiny fawn stranded and trapped in a grate. She immediately stopped and started trying to get the deer out of the grate, the Carthage Police Department said in a Facebook post.
Sgt. James Patterson, who was working school security, helped by contacting the local Game Warden for advice on how to help the deer.
After getting the fawn out of the grate, Cope carried the deer out of the way. With some water and help from the Carthage High School staff, the deer was set free to a location to be reunited with its mother, police said.
Carthage police added that was the best possible outcome for any wild animal.
“Thank you, Blair, for your quick action and taking the proper steps at getting this baby safe and where it belongs,” the Carthage Police Department said.
