ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University has confirmed one person died in an on-campus shooting early Sunday.
The shooting in the center of campus happened about 12:30 a.m. during Yard Fest, part of the Viking Fest events held in the quad.
The victim is a 24-year-old man who was not a student at Elizabeth City State University. His identity is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin, officials said.
In addition, four people, including three ECSU students, suffered gunshot wounds and two ECSU students suffered other injuries during the subsequent commotion.
“Fortunately, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening, and all the injured were transported to a local hospital for treatment,” the statement from the college said.
A spokesman for Sentara Health said four people were treated at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, but three have been discharged. The spokesman could not provide the status of the one who remains in the hospital.
No information on a suspect has been announced. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is asking people with information, photos or videos of the event to contact the SBI at 919-662-4500 or ECSU Police at 252-335-3266.
The campus was placed on lockdown after the shooting, and a shelter-in-place order was issued. The lockdown was lifted later on Sunday.
“ECSU extends its deepest sympathies to all those affected by this tragic event and remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the Viking community,” the university stated in a press release.
The school has increased patrols across campus, and access to the center of campus remains restricted throughout Sunday. Support services are available for students, faculty and staff on campus.
Investigations continue by the ECSU Police, Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and the NC SBI.
