Eight candidates to face off in Bexar County district attorney debate

Organizers say the goal is to help voters easily compare the candidates before Election Day.

SAN ANTONIO — Voters will soon get a closer look at who wants to become Bexar County’s next district attorney.

The Greater San Antonio Chamber and the San Antonio Report will host a debate featuring all eight candidates in the Democratic primary race. Organizers say the forum will give business leaders and the public a better understanding of how each candidate would lead one of the county’s most influential offices.

The debate will focus on each candidate’s vision for the District Attorney’s Office and how they would handle key responsibilities, including charging decisions, case prioritization, and courtroom management. Organizers say those decisions directly affect public safety, economic confidence, and trust in the justice system.

Candidates scheduled to participate include James Bethke, Meli Carrion Powers, Meredith Chacon, Luz Elena Chapa, Jane Davis, Veronica Legarreta, Shannon Locke, and Oscar Salinas.

The event is set for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Carver Community Cultural Center, located at 226 North Hackberry Street. Media will be allowed to arrive beginning at 4:30 p.m., doors will open to the public at 5:30 p.m., and the debate is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Organizers say the goal is to help voters easily compare the candidates before Election Day.

General admission is free, but registration is required. Sponsorship opportunities and VIP tickets are also available through the Greater San Antonio Chamber and the San Antonio Report.
