Elderly man found dead after southeast-side home goes up in flames, SAFD says

Officials with the San Antonio Fire Department says the man was found deceased inside the home.

SAN ANTONIO — A person was found deceased inside a home on the southeast side of San Antonio early Wednesday morning.

The San Antonio Fire Department responded to the reported fire on the 500 block of Schley Avenue around 6:28 a.m. after someone rang their doorbell and alerted them. They answered the door and immediately smelled the smoke, then the alarm also went off.

The fire was reportedly very heavy when first responders arrived at the home. Relatives of the man who lived there arrived at the home pretty quickly, SAFD says. Officials with the SAFD says an elderly man was found deceased inside a back bedroom of the home, where it appears the fire may have originated.

Officials say the damage to the home is significant, but could not give a monetary estimate on the damages. It was mostly smoke in the front of the home and the fire was in the back of the home.

No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Officials urge to make sure that your smoke detectors are working and keep items away from space heaters.

This is a developing story.
