Elderly man killed when golf cart rolled over on him at course on north side, SAPD says

Officers discovered that Robert Andrew Rowton, 72, had been the back passenger on a golf cart that was traveling up a steep hill when it tipped over onto him.

SAN ANTONIO — A 72-year-old man was killed when the golf cart he was riding in rolled backwards and tipped over over onto him, police say.

San Antonio Police responded to The Club at Sonterra located in the 900 block of East Sonterra Boulevard around 5:30 p.m. on Monday for reports of a golf cart accident.

When officers arrived at the club, they discovered Robert Andrew Rowton, 72, had been the back passenger on a golf cart that was traveling up a steep hill on the golf cart path when the front of the cart came off the ground, rolled backwards and then tipped over onto him. The person driving the cart and the front seat passenger were both ejected from the cart.

Rowton was in the back of the cart and was unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead.

The other passenger was taken to the hospital with multiple serious injuries. The driver of the golf cart told officers that he and the victim were conducting a mechanical test on the golf cart due to a similar incident being reported.

The Medical Examiner will conduct a death investigation to determine the cause of death.

There are no criminal charges pending for this case.

This is a developing story.
