Ramsey Clark, previously named Leonard Freeman, changed his name to honor the attorney who got his murder charges from the ’80s overturned before his recent arrest.
SAN ANTONIO — An 80-year-old man has been in sentenced to 35 years in prison after he was caught being in possession of child pornography.
On Thursday, a Bexar County judge handed a 35-year sentence down to Ramsey Clark after charging him on 19 counts of child pornography. The conviction stems from a report submitted by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children by Google showing Clark had been uploading files of child porn onto his devices.
After Clark’s devices were seized by investigators, he confessed to having viewed and possessed “child sexual abuse material” to authorities.
In the 1980s, Clark, previously named Leonard Freeman, was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death for murdering his wife and a peace officer. After several appeals and a “monumental decision” by the U.S. Supreme Court, the DA’s office said, his murder conviction was overturned and he pled guilty to the lesser charge of murder with malice aforethought.
He was given a 99-year sentence which was completed with “good credit” in 2009, when he was released from prison.
In 2021, Freeman decided to charge his name to Ramsey Clark in honor of the attorney responsible for getting his original conviction overturned. Four years later, he’s heading back to prison.
“No child should ever be subjected to this kind of exploitation, and we will pursue and prosecute anyone who chooses to engage in that type of inappropriate conduct,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a press release. “We are grateful for the tireless work of law enforcement and our prosecution team, who played an integral role in ensuring justice was served today.”
