Kerr County officials issued an emergency alert Saturday night for severe weather temporarily stopping volunteer search efforts.
SAN ANTONIO — Members of the Kerr County community obeyed the emergency alert and flash flood warning – immediately pausing search and recovery efforts for volunteers Sunday.
The volunteer headquarters at Tivy Antler Stadium were barren, water crews were grounded and at VFW Post 1480 in Kerrville operations also ceased.
Post commander Erik Burton said Saturday was a “madhouse” with 700 volunteers at the VFW Post wanting to lend a hand any way they could. But that slowed significantly once the emergency alert was issued.
“We’re just waiting for this CodeRED alert to stop so we can get back to work,” Burton said. “The need to help out has been really great. I can’t tell you how happy I am to see all these people come in to our little location and donating and providing the volunteers, wanting to do road cleanup. We had a lady come in here today and all she wanted to do is clean the floor. That’s all we need sometimes just that little help, helps out a whole bunch.”
The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office did allow recovery teams in some areas to resume work later Sunday afternoon.
A flood warning remains in effect for Kerr County through Monday morning.
The Kerrville Police Department urges everyone to keep an eye on low water crossings and to drive with caution.
