FORT WORTH, Texas — As everything in the U.S. gets more expensive, the emergency medicine team at Texas Health Resources is doing what it can to make sure their team member can see his family this Christmas.
In an Instagram post, Dr. J. Mack Slaughter showed a moment where he and his team broke the news to Diego, their environmental services worker, that they had raised enough money for him to visit his family in Colombia.
“Our environmental services worker, Diego, is one of the most KIND, HARD WORKING, and POSITIVE individuals I’ve ever met,” Slaughter wrote in the post. “He NEVER complains and almost ALWAYS has a smile on his face, but talk to Diego for any length of time and it is clear that he deeply loves and very much misses his wife and daughter.”
Slaughter said that Diego has lived in the U.S. and worked at the hospital for at least a couple of years, but sends money to his family back in Colombia to help provide for them.
“He’s such a kind human being through and through,” Slaughter said about Diego. “You can see through to this guy’s soul. He’s just a good human being doing this for his family.”
Diego typically sees his family once a year, but it looked like that wasn’t going to happen this year due to inflating costs. So, his team at Texas Health Resources decided to chip in.
“America in general is an incredibly unaffordable place and we don’t want that to keep you from being with your family,” Dr. J. Mack Slaughter told Diego in a video.
Slaughter has also started a GoFundMe to help raise money for Diego’s trip next Christmas, and to help fulfill Diego’s dream of eventually moving his family to the U.S. to live with him. So far, it has raised almost $10,000 of its $12,000 goal. Anyone wishing to donate can do so here.
