Turnip Ensemble Theater, formed in 2023, will hold a Sunday evening workshop ahead of its main stage debut later this fall.
SAN ANTONIO — A young San Antonio theater organization that distinguishes itself by combining age-old and new-age storytelling techniques is preparing for its first-ever main stage production, a remix of the 1838 fairy tale “The Wild Swans” from the same author who wrote “The Little Mermaid” and “Thumbelina.”
Curtains rise on that show in early November. But on Sunday, those behind Turnip Ensemble Theater are giving San Antonians the chance to try their hand at experiencing the collaboration and artistry that blooms behind the scenes—no experience necessary.
The group is hosting a free Community Devising Workshop on Sunday evening at Bright Coffee (1705 Blanco Road) where attendees will “be introduced to the themes and creative methods behind ‘The Wild Swans,’ explore the art of devised theater and create a short performance of their own.”
Ruthie Buescher, who founded Turnip Ensemble Theater in 2023, said attendees can expect to learn about the techniques of “devised” theater—”a method that uses improv, games and storytelling to create original theater productions.”
Buescher wrote Turnip’s inaugural play “We Sail On In Darkness,” a show that “explored the stories of female mystics across time” and sold out its run. The organization has gone on to hold multiple community workshops to involve the community and give the public a better sense of what it takes to create a devised theater show.
Anyone in the second grade and older is invited to participate in Sunday’s workshop, which runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Spots are limited; you can register here.
Turnip is already planning its next free community workshop in the early weeks of 2026. In the meantime, early bird tickets to see “The Wild Swans” on Nov. 6-9 are available here.
