Boone Partee had an idea to fight cancer with each of his kicks on the gridiron. Then the mission became personal.
SAN ANTONIO — Last weekend’s San Antonio All-Star Game officially brought down the curtain on the high school football season, and also capped the mission of a New Braunfels Unicorn who took his athleticism above and beyond for his last year on the gridiron.
“This year I have been kicking for childhood cancer, raising money trying to find the cure,” said New Braunfels High senior kicker Boone Partee.
Boone received pledges over his senior season to help raise funds for the Kick It For Cancer cause.
“Every kid should get to experience being a kid,” he said. “The people that donate will pledge an amount that can be $1, $5 or $100.
“I was a kid, and I want them to have the same experience I did and not have to go through that. Even $5 can go towards that, to help find the cure.”
Boone has kicked footballs his senior season while paying tribute to every child fighting pediatric cancer, but especially for one in particular: New Braunfels teammate Nolan Cernosek, a sophomore, who was recently diagnosed.
“I didn’t think he was gonna do it,” said Nolan. “He came up and told me and I was really happy about that. It means lots. It is like somebody is in your corner when you need help.”
“It just makes sense,” said Boone’s mother, Evan, about her son’s idea to fight cancer with every kick.
A few weeks after starting the effort and learning Nolan was diagnosed only solidified the importance of the commitment.
“It gives Nolan lots of hope and encouragement to keep fighting,” said Boone.
“Most people don’t really think of childhood cancer as a thing,” Nolan added. “It’s good to spread the awareness.”
Now, at his mother’s suggestion, Boone is keeping the charitable endeavor going in the spring track season, when the pole vaulter will be “clearing it for cancer.”
