James Andrew Woerner was wanted on multiple felony warrants.
SAN ANTONIO — A man is accused of throwing acid on a San Antonio police officer after locking himself in a north-side apartment complex and refusing to come out Saturday afternoon, according to an arrest affidavit.
James Andrew Woerner, 38, will be facing multiple charges including aggravated assault against a public servant along with obstruction or retaliation.
According to an arrest affidavit, SAPD was tasked with apprehending Woerner, who was wanted on several felony warrants including injury to the elderly after he allegedly assaulted his 73-year-old mother.
Documents state that Woerner broke into his mother’s house on Friday and demanded she withdraw money from an ATM. When she refused he threatened to burn her alive, and forced her into a car where he repeatedly hit her and said he would crash to kill them both. His mother managed to jump out of the moving car.
The next day, police said Woerner’s father informed them about his son’s whereabouts and said his son threatened to throw “nitric acid’ onto the police officers.
Document state officers were able to find Woerner on the 900 block of east Sonterra Boulevard around 2 p.m. While they were attempting to arrest Woerner, he threw an acidic substance at an SAPD officer. The substance that landed on the officer also landed on the ground and began to “sizzle.”
According to SAPD, while Woerner was trying to throw the acid at officers he yelled “everyone is going to die.” He also appeared to light a Molotov cocktail and threw it at the police.
Authorities said Woerner was able to escape as officers attempted to decontaminate themselves. Woerner then barricaded himself and refused to come outside but SWAT teams were able to eventually arrest him.
Three officers sustained minor injuries but are expected to recover.
Woerner was booked in the Bexar County jail and is facing a long list of charges.
