Everything to know about violent Whataburger brawl, arrests in San Antonio

Most Texans know you don’t mess with someone’s Whataburger order. While in most cases you’d likely get a scolding and a bit of French, an order mix-up at one of these San Antonio burger joints this weekend resulted in an all-out brawl between 11 hangry customers. Now, seven folks, ranging in age from 21 to 57, have a criminal history in Bexar County and face assault causing bodily injury charges.

The San Antonio Police Department was called out to the Whataburger at 14646 Blanco Road — near the intersection of Blanco and Bitters roads — at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, October 5. Police say a misplaced meal led seven customers to attack another four. Though, a mother of one of the victims points a very specific finger.

“At Whataburger (Blanco and Bitters), part of another table’s order was mistakenly brought to my son and his friends. Instead of the staff acknowledging their error, they reportedly told the other customers, ‘They have your food.’ Moments later, those individuals confronted my son and his friends, and within seconds, the situation escalated far beyond a simple misunderstanding — to a violent assault,” Rebecca Noel posted on Facebook a day after the fisticuffs.

A video she shared of the alleged assault shows several people throwing punches at customers on the floor. Officials confirmed with MySA that an employee who was involved was off-duty at the time of the altercation and is no longer employed with the Texas-founded company.

As a result, the seven folks were arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury: 21-year-old Andres Garcia Cardenas, 21-year-old Tyrone Tolliver, 57-year old Miguel Torres, 21-year-old Meili Torres, 21-year-old Andrew Lopez, 23-year-old Deontae Tolliver and 53-year-old Veronica Valdez. Cardenas was also booked on a hit-and-run charge from an incident SAPD issued an arrest warrant for in 2021, according to court records.

All of the suspects were released the following day, October 6, at various times throughout the morning. The victims have not been named in the case, but SAPD confirmed a 20-year-old man and woman alongside an 18-year-old man and woman were considered victims in the case.

“At Whataburger, the safety of our Guests and employees is our top priority. We are cooperating fully with the authorities,” a Whataburger spokesperson told MySA.

There were no “major injuries” reported as a result of the burger joint brawl, according to SAPD.
