The Duke Fire leveled six homes in Bexar and Atascosa counties. Jessica Guerra and family are hoping the public can help them raise money for a new mobile home.
SAN ANTONIO — There are days when Jessica Guerra believes she’s still trapped in the middle of a dream. But every time she wakes up in the morning and looks out at the blackened landscape of destruction, realizing this is reality and her home is no more.
“It’s hard for me because it’s like, we need a home, my kids want to go home and my kids wants to go home but we can’t,” Guerra said.
It’s been three weeks since the Duke Fire ravaged parts of Bexar and Atascosa Counties. The 200-acre fire destroyed at least six homes and leveled over a dozen other structures.
The Guerra family have spent the past few weeks digging through piles of debris, salvaging what’s possible.
The destructive Duke Fire pierced the hearts of many, leaving behind skeletons of comfort and memories in the form of ashes.
“Everything’s destroyed,” Guerra said. “My bed’s hanging over here, my son’s bed’s on that side. I lost photographs, I lost my memories, my kids’ baby pictures.”
Before the blaze took over, Guerra had looked forward to seeing her daughter’s face light up with a surprise since she’s a big Selena fan.
“I was going to surprise her because she always wanted a poster and I said it’s gone, it’s like ashes,” Guerra said.
The American Red Cross stepped up in the beginning, then neighbors pitched in.
“I thank everybody for supporting us, donating clothes, gift cards, I am thankful,” Guerra said.
But the Guerra family is now hoping to raise the funds for a new mobile home. Their home of more than 20 years that was leveled in the fire wasn’t insured.
“God will lift us so high up in good spirits,” Guerra said. “I’m seeking for help so we can rebuild.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to assist Guerra and her family. Go here to learn more.
