Exterior restroom doors removed to address vaping at Boerne Champion High School

Some mirrors were also removed to avoid any lines of sight into the restroom from the hallway.

BOERNE, Texas — Boerne ISD has taken some measures to address widespread vaping among students at one of its high schools.

One of those measures include the removal of restroom entrance doors from the hallway that lead into the bathrooms. Some mirrors were also removed to avoid any lines of sight into the restroom from the hallway.

The district said all restroom stall doors were left in place. The district said they will also be adjusting the hallway duty assignments during passing periods. The campus Safety and Security staff will also monitor the restrooms during class time as part of their normal campus checks.

The district released the following statement that said in part:

“Our “See Something, Say Something” safety campaign continues to be a valuable tool for the confidential reporting of student and safety concerns. Student safety is our top priority at BISD. We appreciate the support of our parents and community in our efforts to keep students safe and responsible while at school.”

Possession of a vape device for anyone under the age of 21 is illegal in the state of Texas. Additonal, a new law passed in 2023 by the Texas Legislature bans imposes mandatory punishment on students. Any student caught vaping within 300 feet of school property or on school property will face transfer to the district’s alternative school.  The law took effect Sept. 1, 2023 and applies to any school-sponsored or school-related activity, whether on or off school property.
