Sunshine returned Monday, but it’s staying cold! Afternoon highs reaching the 30s and 40s, with some Hill Country spots staying below freezing. Here’s the latest.
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — IMPACT DAYS: Monday, Jan. 26 through Tuesday morning, Jan. 27
Reason: Modified arctic air with freezing rain and ice accumulation.
The breakdown
An Extreme Cold Warning originally set to expire Monday was extended to at least 9 p.m. Tuesday for most of South-Central Texas, including San Antonio, as frigid temperatures continue to start the week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), much of the region will wake up to morning lows in the teens on Tuesday. In Llano, the mercury could be as low as nine degrees.
Here’s a taste of some anticipated morning lows arriving Tuesday:
- Llano: Nine degrees
- Fredericksburg: 10
- Kerrville: 12
- Uvalde: 13
- Gonzales: 13
- New Braunfels: 16
- San Marcos: 16
- Rocksprings: 18
- San Antonio: 19
These are colder conditions than many South-Central Texas cities experienced last weekend, with the NWS warning about the possibility of “hypothermia or frostbite on exposed skin if precautions are not taken.” The weather service also says wind chill measures could be in the single-digits for certain communities in the Hill Country.
The good news: Precipitation chances are practically non-existent for our region for most of this week. Some cities, including San Antonio, could see rain chances Friday—but the chances are low and there’s time for them to potentially drop lower still.
Preparing for the cold
Even without the threat of freezing rain to start the week, the freezing cold means you should still take precautions at home!
NWS reminds residents extreme cold could become life threatening and likely damage unprotected pipes and put livestock at risk if precautions are not taken. Dress in layers including a hat, face mask and gloves if you must go outside.
Don’t forget your pets! NWS urges pet owners to make sure to give proper care to our four-legged friends to ensure they have a safe space that is warm and dry during the winter storm.
