SAN ANTONIO — Crowds gathered at different parks around San Antonio on Monday to celebrate Memorial Day and honor those we’ve lost in service.
At Guadalupe River State Park, there was a long line of cars waiting to get inside.
Hotdogs and hamburgers were on the grill and kids and parents wadded in the water.
While many are making the most of a three-day weekend, families we spoke with say they came not just to enjoy the day, but to remember what Memorial Day is really about.
“It’s a time for us to remember our veterans that have served and also the people that we’ve lost that also served in the military,” said Army veteran Aquilla Hill.
Memorial Day is a full affair for Hill and her cousin Kowonno Greene, who are both veterans.
Aquilla said she celebrates Memorial Day in honor of her great grandfather who served in World War II.
Abraham Gonzalez was also at Guadalupe River celebrating Memorial Day in honor of his brother Juan who is in the National Guard.
“We want to celebrate veterans and people who are on active duty, people who are at war,” said Gonzalez.
And San Antonio being Military City U.S.A., it makes the world of a difference.
“We moved to San Antonio because of the great veteran community that they have. It’s amazing being here,” said Hill.
