Family, community mourn child found dead in Trinity River after car went into the water, officials say

The driver, a woman, was rescued by first responders Saturday night and taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A deceased child was recovered from the Trinity River Sunday after a car went into the water Saturday evening, police said.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department, officers responded to the area of Beach and East Freeway around 5:47 p.m. to the report of a car that had gone into the river. Fort Worth Police officers found a car in the water and took quick action as bystanders watched it all unfold.

“You could see boats. You could see an ambulance, cops. You could see people watching everything that was going on,” bystander Jackie Cedillo said.

Upon arrival, police said officers jumped into the river, rescued the driver they described as an adult woman and immediately started CPR. Eventually, paramedics took her to the hospital in critical condition. Police called for a wrecker to pull the woman’s car from the river.

According to Fort Worth PD, the call that dispatch received said that there was also an infant in the car.

After searching the car, officers did not locate anyone. That led to a search in the river, which was eventually paused Saturday evening.

“They were doing it hours and hours looking for that infant,” Cedillo said.

Officials continued searching for victims on Sunday with boats equipped with SONAR, the Fort Worth Fire Department said in a press release. The remains of the child, who was under two years old, were later found in the river, police confirmed. Police did not immediately identify the woman or the child.

Although Cedillo doesn’t know the family, she placed white and yellow flowers in the Trinity River.

“Usually, when you have babies or toddlers, that is the color for them,” Cedillo said. “It’s sad. It’s very heartbreaking.”
