Family holds memorial outside south side nightclub where father of 3 was gunned down

The victim’s family said they were told by a witness that their loved one was trying to break up a fight when he was shot.

SAN ANTONIO — A family is praying for justice after a husband and father of three was shot and killed outside a south side nightclub early Sunday morning.

Wednesday night, family and friend’s of Ricky Marquez gathered outside Papi Gallo Cantina off Commercial Avenue for a memorial. They said Marquez was trying to break up a fight there when he was gunned down.

Police have yet to arrest anyone for the 42-year-old’s murder.  His mother, Frances Vasquez said she got a call at 1 a.m. Sunday about the shooting and rushed to the crime scene.

“I asked the cop, please tell me the truth, what’s going on? I’m his mom and he’s my son,” Vasquez said. “He said I’m sorry to tell you mom, your son is gone. He’s gone.”

San Antonio police said it all started with a verbal argument inside the club that ended in the parking lot with gunfire. Police said two people were shot. Marquez died at the scene, but the other victim was taken to the hospital and is okay.

However, the suspect took off. The family said a witness told them Marquez was not involved in the actual argument but just happened to be outside to help break up the fight.

“He tried to help you know get in it, you know the say don’t get into it because you don’t know what the worse is, so that’s what happened,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez said her son was the life of the party and loved by many. She said she is praying whoever did this is held accountable.

“I love you my son forever, I love you and hopefully justice, justice will be completed,” Vasquez said.

If you have information about the shooting, you are asked to give SAPD a call.
