Family mourns 60-year-old man killed in west-side San Antonio crash; witness reports possible illegal turn

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio family is mourning the loss of 60-year-old Ralph Randolph Reynolds, who died Tuesday morning after a violent crash at the intersection of Culebra and Ingram roads.

Reynolds, described by his family as the “glue” holding generations together, was riding in an Uber on his way to San Antonio International Airport for a business trip when the collision occurred.

“Been a presence in all his grandbabies’ lives, and all of his children’s lives,” said Matthew Robinson, Reynolds’ son-in-law.
“He was kind of like the glue for our whole family. Extended included,” added his daughter, Angela Reynolds.

San Antonio police said no official cause has been determined. However, according to the crash report, an eyewitness told investigators they saw the vehicle Reynolds was riding in make an illegal turn. That account and others remain under review as the investigation continues.

Family members say firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove Reynolds from the wreckage.

Robinson said Reynolds usually preferred to drive himself but decided to use a rideshare that morning. “He opted for an Uber this morning. And that didn’t go as planned,” he said.

Angela Reynolds said she’s still struggling to process the sudden loss. “I got the call and it just really didn’t feel real,” she said.

Uber issued a statement Wednesday calling the crash “heartbreaking” and offering condolences to the family. “We are keeping those who were injured in our thoughts and are standing by to assist law enforcement as their investigation continues,” the company said.

The family says the tragedy has shaken them during what is normally a joyful time of year. “It’s completely upended our lives at the holidays,” Robinson said.

“I keep thinking about how severe it had to have been,” Angela added. “Because they won’t let us see him.”

The investigation remains active. Police have not released information about possible charges related to the crash.
