Family of 28-year-old flood victim Victor Manuel Macías Castro thanks community for overwhelming amount of support

Victor’s girlfriend Jacklyn Rivera was on the phone with him when water was entering his car.

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Manuel Macías Castro’s girlfriend, Jacklyn Rivera, recounts the final moments she had with him.

She says she was on the phone with Macías Castro when water began rushing into his car in the area of Perrin Beitel and Austin Highway, which was overcome by a flash flood during last Thursday’s historic storms in San Antonio.

“He said, ‘I love you, I love you, Jackie,’” Rivera recalls. “I said, ‘I love you too,’ and that I was scared. ‘You’re really freaking me out.’”

“The water was up to his chest and he was trying to get in the backseat to break the window. I hear more banging. And I tell him, ‘Call the police, call the police’. And he says, ‘I don’t want to, I don’t think I’m going to get to.’”

Eventually, Macías Castro’s family made their way to the scene and spotted his car.

Victor’s mother, Rosalba Castro Macías, says the vehicle was underwater. When her husband checked the last known location of their son’s phone, it matched where his car and body were found off of an access road near Loop 410 and Perrin Beitel.

Eduardo Macías says he will never forget his son, saying Victor will always be in his heart and memories.

His family says Victor was a devoted father of three who was happy, was full of ideas and had big plans for the future.

“With strength, we’ll get through this,” Rivera said.

The Macías Castro family has reached their $10,000 goal for funeral expenses as they honor Victor’s life. If you would like to contribute to the GoFundMe, click here.

The family will also be holding a barbeque plate sale this Friday at 1134 W. Hildebrand Ave., beginning at 11 a.m.
