Fan reaction: Spurs fans dogpile Lakers’ Anthony Davis for his thoughts on Wembanyama and the DPOY Award

“Wemby just lives in his head rent free,” posted one Spurs fan on social media.

SAN ANTONIO — There’s little doubt that San Antonio Spurs‘ Victor Wembanyama is the NBA’s best defender.

He leads the league with 3.9 blocks per game, can alter shots near the basket, and his size makes him an imposing figure for any opposing player who dares to drive to the rim.

Opponents’ shooting percentages plummet when he is on the court, and the Spurs boast one of the better defenses.

Wembanyama has a defensive rating of 104.9 this season. He averages 10.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals, and the Spurs have a +4.6 net rating when he’s on the court compared to -9.4 when he’s off.

But don’t tell all of that to Lakers’ Anthony Davis.

In a chat with ESPN, Davis opined that there is a “narrative” for Wembanyama to be crowned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year this season.

“I feel like the narrative is being pushed for Wemby to get it. Right? Obviously, he’s averaging what, like, 4 blocks or something crazy like that. But then it goes back: Are we just talking about his blocks? I don’t know how anything works anymore.”

Spurs fans were quick to correct the Lakers’ big man, immediately defending Wemby and slamming Davis for his take.

One Spurs fan pulled out the comparison of the defensive stats between Wemby and Davis, and it clearly shows that the Spurs are center ahead.
