Fans are driving across South Central Texas to get Spurs-inspired playoff haircuts before game day.
BOERNE, Texas — As the Spurs continue their playoff run, fans across San Antonio are finding new ways to support the team — and some are taking that excitement straight to the barber chair.
Inside Buena Gente Barbershop in Boerne, Spurs logos and playoff-inspired designs are quickly becoming one of the most requested cuts ahead of game nights.
Barber RJ Martinez says business has exploded during the playoffs.
“Shaved. Man, I ain’t gonna lie to you too many. It’s like too many to to count,” Martinez said.
Martinez has been cutting hair for 25 years and says fans have been making the drive from all over South Central Texas for the custom designs.
“People come in, ask for that a lot. I got people coming from San Antonio that wants to come get the same haircut. People come from Buda, Texas, Seguin, Lytle,” Martinez said.
One customer, John Vella, says the haircut is all part of the playoff excitement.
“For the Spurs hype going on around there in the playoffs. Doing really good. So it’s about time to get that Spurs fever going,” Vella said.
The specific Spurs playoff design featured in the shop costs around $80 and usually lasts several days before growing out.
“I usually like 3 to 4 days most a week, to be honest, for a while,” Vella said.
Martinez says he first learned how to cut hair growing up on San Antonio’s east side after his family couldn’t afford regular barbershop visits.
“My mom couldn’t afford to give me some clippers. So I went out there to Walmart to go give me a pair of clippers. And me and my boys, we end up just practicing on each other, and I just got cold with it,” Martinez said.
Now, he says the designs have become part of the city’s playoff culture.
“Yeah, doing these designs and stuff like that, it’s part of it’s part of our culture. So it’s always been in my blood,” Martinez said.
