Fatal train collision claims life of driver on tracks in Atascosa County, DPS says

Troopers said 63-year-old Eloy Marroquin was pronounced dead at the scene.

ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas — Troopers are investigating a fatal crash that ended with a pickup truck being struck by a train Friday morning in Atascosa County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on Interstate 37 near mile marker 93, DPS said.

Investigators said a 2022 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling southbound when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway, entered the center median and traveled over a steep embankment onto railroad tracks below. The agency said the vehicle became airborne and struck the rails. No train was present at the time of the initial crash.

At around 7:46 a.m., a northbound Union Pacific train struck the pickup, which remained disabled on the tracks from the earlier crash, according to officials.

The driver and sole occupant, identified as 63-year-old Eloy Marroquin of Edcouch, Texas was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
