FEMA to close one of its Kerr County disaster recovery center this week

Another recovery center will remain in operation in Hunt, Texas, for the time being.

SAN ANTONIO — A federally operated disaster recovery center stationed in Kerrville since the catastrophic July floods will close up shop at 5 p.m. Thursday, leaving a lone FEMA service center operating out of Hunt, Texas.

The assistance area had been operating out of Hill Country Youth Event Center at 3785 Memorial Blvd. since late August as a way for families affected by the flooding to get in-person resources and submit their information for federal assistance.

Kerr County was the hardest-hit area of Central Texas when the Guadalupe River rose to historic levels the morning of July 4, tearing through campgrounds, youth camps and residents along the river. Officials say 117 people died in Kerr County as a result of the natural disaster while  two remain missing more than two months later, including an 8-year-old Austin girl who was at Camp Mystic.

A recovery center run by FEMA will remain in operation at the LJ Vineyards (1551 Texas Highway 39) in Hunt, Texas, for the time being. The location is able to provide help for housing, medical or dental expenses, childcare, vehicle damage, and replacement of essential items. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sundays.

Meanwhile, FEMA has set a Sept. 28 deadline for homeowners or renters affected by the floods to apply for federal help.

FEMA has approved more than 3,400 assistance applications and provided more than $42 million in aid so far in connection with the July flooding in Central Texas. Find more information about getting aid here
