City leaders will decide whether to charge $5 during busy times at the longtime free downtown Fiesta event, citing rising security costs.
SAN ANTONIO — With Fiesta just around the corner, a major change could be coming to one of its most popular—and historically free—events.
Fiesta de los Reyes may soon charge admission during peak hours, pending a decision from the San Antonio City Council.
The proposal, set for a vote Thursday morning, would introduce a $5 fee for anyone 13 and older—but only during the busiest times of the day. Those peak hours could begin as early as 1 p.m. or as late as 6 p.m., depending on the day. Visitors who arrive before those times and stay would not have to pay.
Organizers say the change comes down to safety.
The Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation, which produces Fiesta de los Reyes, says security costs have surged in recent years. After two shootings at the event, organizers added fencing, bag checks, metal detectors and enhanced screening measures. The San Antonio Police Department also plays a larger role in crowd control.
Those added precautions came with a price. Organizers say they spent more than expected on security last year—and ultimately lost money.
Under the proposal, the first $250,000 in revenue would go toward covering event costs. Any additional funds would be split between the city and participating consejos.
Fiesta de los Reyes runs daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., with extended hours until midnight on Friday, April 24.
For now, whether the event remains free—or partially paid—will be up to City Council’s vote.
