Fiesta de los Reyes boosts security with checkpoints and metal detectors following last year’s fatal shooting.
Friday kicked off Fiesta de Los Reyes at Historic Market Square, one of the premiere events for San Antonio’s biggest party.
The 10-day free festival has undergone some major changes this year to make sure those attending feel comfortable. Last year, during Fiesta, two young men were shot and killed. Four others were injured.
“What we were nervous about was that people would be hesitant to come, and so we knew that by increasing security, people would feel comfortable,” said Frank Garza, co-chair of Fiesta de Los Reyes. ” And I will tell you, you can see by the crowds, people are coming. So we’re really excited about the next ten days.”
While there has always been a police presence at the events, there are six checkpoints that greet Fiesta-goers at Fiesta de Los Reyes. Those attending have to walk through metal detectors.
If you’re bringing a bag, its dimensions cannot exceed 12 x 6 x 12, though there are exceptions for diaper bags. Clear bags are encouraged. Backpacks and ice coolers are not allowed. Outside food or drink are also not allowed.
There’s also fencing around Historic Market Square as a result of last year’s shooting.
