Fiesta DWI arrests down from 2023, SAPD data shows

The highest number of suspected drunk drivers traveling to or from Fiesta this year came on the first Saturday.

SAN ANTONIO — Fewer revelers made the decision to drive after Fiesta events when they’ve had one too many to drink, based on the number of arrests made by San Antonio police.

According to numbers provided by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), officers made 146 Fiesta-related DWI arrests over the 11-day celebration last month. That’s down from each of the past two years, when SAPD officers made 146 and 129 Fiesta-related DWI arrests in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

The first Saturday of Fiesta 2024 brought the biggest number of arrests in a single day, with 18 suspect drunk drivers taken into custody. Across the final weekend, from Friday through Sunday, SAPD made 36 Fiesta-related DWI arrests, compared to 57 in the same weekend last year.

San Antonio police typically emphasize keeping an eye on the roads during Fiesta, given how synonymous the event is with imbibing.

As for what constitutes a Fiesta-related DWI apprehension, SAPD has told KENS 5 officers rely on “evidence that may indicate they were participating at Fiesta,” including where drivers were traveling to or from. In some cases, drivers admitted they were at Fiesta when pulled over by police.
