The Bulldogs will be hunting for their first state title in football in three tries when they play
SAN ANTONIO — The Yoakum Bulldogs are heading to the Class 3A-I State Championship after handily defeating the Llano Yellowjackets in Pflugerville on Friday night, racing out to a 30-6 lead before halftime and never looking back.
The final score: 71-27, good for the Bulldogs’ most points in a game since November 2019. They’re heading to just their third state title game and first since 2016; they have yet to taste UIL glory in those prior two trips.
Meanwhile, it was just the second loss of the year for Llano, which had given up 14 points or fewer in four of their past five matchups. The Bulldogs and Yellowjackets entered Friday’s semifinal with a combined 25-3 record.
Yoakum (13-2) had won just four playoff games all decade before this year’s run, which saw them score an average of 44.2 points per game in five matchups while limiting opponents to 20.4 points per game.
Llano, meanwhile, had collected at least 13 wins for the third time in four seasons. The Yellowjackets hadn’t lost since mid-September.
Standing in the way of Yoakum’s first-ever state championship in football: the Grandview Zebras, who improved to 12-2 after emerging victorious, 21-18, in a tough game against Peaster. The Class 3A-I title game is set for Dec. 18 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
