Fire destroys south-side trailer home; officials blame overloaded electrical outlet

A trailer home is declared a total loss after a fire traced to an overloaded electrical setup, displacing four residents but resulting in no injuries.

SAN ANTONIO — A trailer home on the southeast-side is a total loss after an early-morning fire that broke out Monday, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

The call came in around 2:46 a.m. for a structure fire in the 5300 block of Southcross Ranch Road. Battalion chiefs said crews arrived to find flames coming from a bedroom at the back of the home.

Investigators later found a burned-out outlet and determined the fire started from an overloaded electrical setup, which included an extension cord and a multi-plug adapter—sometimes called an “octopus.” SAFD ruled the fire accidental.

Firefighters were able to knock down the flames quickly, but officials said the area contains a stretch of homes built close together, which can allow fire to spread rapidly. In this case, crews kept the flames contained to the single structure.

The trailer was occupied by four residents, each renting separate rooms. No one was injured, but officials said about 70% of the home sustained fire damage, along with additional smoke and water damage. The home is considered a total loss, and all residents will be displaced.

The investigation is ongoing, but fire officials said they have ruled out any criminal involvement at this time.
