Firefighter delivers baby unexpectedly at family’s home

First responders said they found the pregnant woman on the bathroom floor and made the decision to deliver the baby at home rather than try transport to a hospital.

FOLSOM, Calif. — After the Folsom Fire Department received a call last month for a potential imminent baby delivery, firefighter-paramedic Kyle Post and crew arrived at a house in American River Canyon.

First responders said they found the pregnant woman on the bathroom floor and made the decision to facilitate the birth at home rather than attempt transport to a hospital.

Post, 31, delivered the baby — his seventh time doing so.

“For whatever reason, I’ve had a lot of them,” he told ABC10. “People will go 19 years in their career and never deliver a child.”

The healthy baby boy came into the world the evening of March 6, Post said.

“It’s always an awesome feeling to bring life into the world and do it in a way that’s so positive, so I felt really good about it,” he said.

Post delivered the boy because he was the primary paramedic at the time, he said. The baby was transported safely to the hospital after he was born, according to first responders.

The Folsom Fire Department reunited Friday with the baby when his family visited a station. First responders sent their routine fire engine and ambulance to the call in March, and Post said four other crew members assisted him with delivery.

“I was the person that delivered the child, but I wouldn’t have been able to do it with the support of everyone on the crew,” Post said.

Childbirth, especially in a pre-hospital environment, can be a stressful situation; it can go really well or really poorly quickly, he said. After the baby boy was born in March, Post told ABC10 he was very happy and excited. However, it’s always a good idea to follow your birth plan.
