Firefighter injured, several families displaced in North Texas fire where building partially collapsed, officials say

An apartment building in western Fort Worth partially collapsed due to the fire, injuring a firefighter, FWFD said.

FORT WORTH, Texas — One firefighter was injured and several families were displaced after a fire partially collapsed an apartment building overnight in western Fort Worth, fire officials confirmed to WFAA.

The Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD) said they got a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday about the apartment fire, located in the 2800 block of Las Vegas Trail. When crews arrived, they found the apartment building being blazed by a heavy fire on the first and second floor.

FWFD said strong winds, heavy rain, and continuous lightning made their efforts difficult and a second alarm was called for by the incident commander.

At one point, according to FWFD, an overhanging roof collapsed and fell onto one of their firefighters. He was quickly pulled from the debris by surrounding crew members and transported to the hospital by MedStar, according to FWFD. The firefighter has since been released from the hospital and is in good spirits with minor injuries, the department said in an update Saturday morning.

One resident was also injured but treated on scene by emergency personnel.

FWFD said six to eight apartment units were damaged by the fire, displacing about 14 people. The Red Cross was called to the scene to help these residents with the resources they need, FWFD said.

FWFD said the fire is under investigation.
