Firefighters battle heavy blaze at south-side home, SAFD says

SAFD said crews put out a heavy fire at a home, with the flames originating from a back addition. A woman who lives in the house was able to evacuate safely.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio firefighters put out a heavy fire at a south-side home on Monday afternoon, according to officials.

SAFD said crews responded to a home on the 3600 block of Commercial Avenue where officials said there was a heavy fire coming from the back side of the house.

Firefighters attempted to make entry through the front but weren’t able to get to the back due to the layout of the home, according to officials. They redeployed the lines around the back of the home.

SAFD officials said the house appeared to have an addition in the back where the flames originated.

A woman who lives in the house was home alone cooking when officials said she noticed smoke coming from the back addition of the house and called 911. She was able to safely evacuate.

A neighboring house suffered minor damage, according to fire officials, but the blaze was contained to that back addition.

Firefighters said the back addition suffered severe damage but there was only some smoke and heat damage inside the home.

No injuries were reported. Officials say an investigation is underway into how the fire started.
