Fireworks may be fun — but not for pets

Animal Care Services is urging pet owners to keep animals indoors, provide a quiet space, and plan ahead to keep pets safe and calm during New Year’s celebrations.

SAN ANTONIO — Fireworks may signal celebration for people, but for many pets, the loud booms can be downright frightening.

Animal Care Services is reminding pet owners that fireworks and other loud New Year’s noise can cause animals to panic, run away, or act out of fear. Officials recommend keeping pets indoors, away from the noise, and setting up a quiet, comfortable space with food, water, and familiar toys.

Pets should never be left outside during fireworks, even in fenced yards, as fear can cause them to escape or injure themselves. Fireworks also remain illegal within San Antonio city limits.

Officials say proper ID, including a collar and microchip, can help reunite lost pets with their owners if they do get loose.

Animal Care Services encourages pet owners to plan ahead so the New Year starts safely — and calmly — for everyone in the family.
