First direct flight from SA to Washington, D.C. departs Monday

It will only be offered through American Airlines, who told us it was time to meet the demand.

SAN ANTONIO — The first direct flight to Washington D.C. is departing from San Antonio on Monday.

Many are on board this morning including lawmakers from the San Antonio area who championed the daily direct route.

The flight will go to D.C. and back without the inconvenience of stopping along the way.

The non-stop flight was commemorated during a ceremony at the San Antonio International Airport on Sunday.

That’s where several of our local and national leaders spoke about the effort to get here.

This route has been 20 years in the making and finally made official in December, when the U.S. Department of Transportation approved flights in and out of Ronald Reagan National or DCA.

This route marks the 46th nonstop flight out of San Antonio for passengers to take.

It will only be offered through American Airlines, who told us it was time to meet the demand.

Amid all the excitement, we did have to ask about the concern over airline safety. It’s been a little over a month since the tragic crash involving an American Airlines flight at DCA.

Senator Ted Cruz says changes have been made to improve safety to ensure a smooth flight for those on board.

The American Airlines flight departed at 6:35 a.m. Monday morning.
