First ever ‘Kings of Horror’ convention happening in San Antonio

You can meet horror celebrities on the Alamo City’s northside through Sunday.

SAN ANTONIO — If you’re looking to meet some of your favorite scream kings and queens, a new convention is happening this weekend on the City’s north side.

It’s the first ever Kings of Horror Convention in San Antonio’s Shrine Auditorium. It’ll be full of manic monsters, scary screenings and of course celebrities like Diane Franklin from Better Off Dead!

Franklin says she loves conventions because she gets to meet fans of all ages, including younger ones.

“That means that the parents have passed it on or that the kids actually have an interest in history and nostalgia,” said Franklin.

But if you haven’t seen Better Off Dead, maybe you’ve seen her in the comedies The Last American Virgin or Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

“If you’re usually a horror actress, you can only go to horror conventions. If you are a comedy actress, you may do to Comic Cons, but so I’ve been able to go to a lot of different venues,”  Franklin said.

If you’re a fan of the frights, there will be plenty here this weekend. Perhaps the ghoul from Jeepers Creepers, Pennywise from It, Friday the 13th’s Jason Vorhees and Chucky from Child’s Play.

Along with Franklin, you could meet Andre Gower and Ryan Lambert from Monster Squad.

“To have a resurgence, you know, 19, 20 years after the fact, and then that resurgence is still kind of burning, still going, we’re still talking about this movie,” Gower said.

Gower and Lambert say meeting the fans and streaming videos are just two of things that kept their film alive for decades.

“We did the movie, it came out, it was out for a week, and then we moved on. And then you didn’t. You kept it going,” Lambert said.

The Kings of Horror Convention takes place through the weekend.
