First interview coming soon? Cowboys reportedly interested in new candidate

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted an update on X on Wednesday morning, saying the Cowboys “have interest in and are expected to interview” Robert Saleh.

DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly interested in interviewing former Jets head coach Robert Saleh for their head coaching position.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted an update on X on Wednesday morning, saying the Cowboys “have interest in and are expected to interview” Saleh, who was fired by the Jets earlier this season.

Despite reports that Jerry Jones has talked with Deion Sanders about the open job, an interview with Saleh would be the Cowboys’ first known request for a formal interview, according to Rapoport.

Saleh’s Jets struggled for three-plus years in his lone stint at a head coach, but most of Saleh’s tenure in New York was marred by poor quarterback play. The team acquired Aaron Rodgers before the 2023 season, but Rodgers was injured in the season opener. When the Jets started 2-3 this season, Saleh got fired.

But Saleh was a widely respected and successful coordinator before taking the Jets job, leading the San Francisco 49ers defense during some of their best seasons of late, including a berth in the Super Bowl in 2020.

Saleh would be a slight departure from some of the top candidates getting interest in the current coaching cycle. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has received the most buzz, former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy — another offensive-minded coach — has been linked to multiple openings, and Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has been another name linked to the Cowboys, due to his previous stint with the club both as a player and assistant coach.

Among the candidates with defensive backgrounds, Lions coordinator Aaron Glenn has received the most buzz. So, Saleh getting a look at the Cowboys job is, if anything, likely to shake up the latest betting odds on who will get the gig in Dallas.
