First-of-its-kind park near San Antonio will be a new floating destination

The upcoming county park will include the county’s first-of-its-kind water trail, which will be used only for floating, kayaking and canoeing on the Guadalupe, according to a county-wide memo shared by Kendall County Commissioner Precinct 2 Andra Wisian. The near water trail will allow visitors to float downstream to Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area, another Kendall County park.

“This park brings together two important goals — protecting the land and giving people a meaningful way to experience it,” Wisian said in the memo.

“By connecting this new park to Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area, residents will be able to enjoy the Guadalupe River from public land in a way that simply hasn’t been possible before, while still preserving the river and surrounding habitat for future generations,” she continued.

Kendall County approved the property’s purchase with funds from Proposition A, a voter-approved measure passed in 2022 to support conservation and recreation. The proposition authorizes the county to issue up to $20 million in general obligation bonds to acquire conservation land and protect water quality, wildlife habitats and recreational access.

The final acreage total is still being counted, and the property will undergo a required inspection and survey period, according to Wisian’s memo. The county also holds an environmental review period over the property. During that time, the county can terminate the purchase if any issues arise.
