Flood Watch for counties outside San Antonio through Friday morning | KENS 5 Weather Impact Alert

Communities in the western Hill Country and southern Edwards Plateau face the greatest risk of dangerous flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — IMPACT DAYS: Wednesday, Nov. 19 to Friday, Nov. 21

Reason: Threat of possible severe storms, good chance for rain and some flooding

The breakdown

Strong storms arrived Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. Storms remain possible through Friday morning across parts of South-Central Texas, bringing an expanded risk of flooding and marginal risk of severe storms.

The National Weather Service says a Flood Watch was in effect as of midnight Wednesday night. It’s expected to remain in place through 6 a.m. Friday, with possible rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches and local amounts of up to 8  inches within the watch area.

A Flash Flood Warning related to the Guadalupe River at Hunt ended around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

NWS officials say flash flooding and river flooding are possible with this weather event, particularly in southeast Val Verde County, northwest Uvalde County and most of Edwards, Real and Kinney counties.

By the time Thursday night rolls around, north Bexar County will be in a Level 2 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall, with south Bexar County in the Level 1 out of 4 risk area.

It’s important to know the difference between watches and warnings:

  • A Flood Watch means flooding is possible and those in the impacted areas should stay tuned to their information sources for the latest.
  • A Flood Warning means flooding is actively happening and roads can expected to be flooded. In these situations, it’s important to keep to higher ground and never drive around barriers on the road.
