Following backlash, Austin Club Superstition drops controversial dress code

Superstition, in an email, wrote that the club’s dress code is now just “upscale and fashionable,” and that they will be “allowing our patrons to translate that as they see fit,” leaving that discretion to club-goers rather than bouncers or management.

“We welcome everyone from old and new Austin and every community therein,” a representative for the club continued, “but as a celebratory venue, we want to make sure our guests reflect that celebration.”

The club’s website before yesterday afternoon had a Prohibited Items section that included athletic gear and apparel, with hats not allowed in the VIP area; shorts, including denim, biker, and sweatshorts; torn or cut-off clothing; sports team attire; and slides or flip flops. The Dress Code section read: “Dress code strictly enforced with management discretion.”

Now the Dress Code section simply reads “upscale and fashionable attire required.” The Prohibited Items section no longer contains any clothing restrictions, but instead contains a list of other items previously listed as prohibited, like backpacks and large bags, GoPros, weapons, and laser pointers.

Superstition opens on December 29 with a DJ set by Montreal’s Chromeo. Tickets are already sold out for a New Year’s Eve performance by French electronic duo Justice.
