Former Churchill High School swimmer making waves, breaking records at Notre Dame

Freshman Carli Cronk just broke Notre Dame’s oldest school record in program history over the weekend.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A young swimmer from San Antonio is making waves and breaking records at her new college.

Carli Cronk is only a freshman for the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame University, but she has already made a name for herself by breaking the oldest school record on the books in Indiana.

Cronk swam the 400 Individual Medley in just 4:07.63 at the Tim Welsh Classic on Saturday, Jan. 25. The previous record for the event was set by Emma Reaney back in 2014. Not only did Cronk set a new record, she recorded the 15th fastest time in the country with her amazing swim. The 400 IM is a race where you swim 100 yards of all four strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

The San Antonio native also won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.28 and now ranks fourth in school history in that event. She finished eighth in the 200 IM and also swam the second leg of the 800 freestyle  relay that placed fourth for the team.

Carli is a four-time Scholastic All-American who is majoring in business analytics at Notre Dame.

Born deaf, Cronk said she’s been swimming since she was two.

Cronk also competes separately for hearing-impaired competitions like the Deaflympics. In 2022, Cronk won a gold medal in every event she competed in, and her spoils were 12 gold medals in team and individual races.

She has her sights set on competing in the 2028 Olympics being held in Los Angeles.
