Former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy lands another NFL head coaching job, ESPN reports

Mike McCarthy has reportedly landed a new NFL coaching gig.

DALLAS — Former Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has reportedly landed another NFL head coaching job.

And it’s a big one.

McCarthy’s hometown Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to hire him, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday.

McCarthy did not coach in 2025 after parting ways with the Cowboys. McCarthy coached Dallas for five seasons, winning 12 games per season from 2021 to 2023, but the Cowboys failed to advance beyond the divisional round and had just one playoff win during McCarthy’s tenure.

Even though it didn’t work out for McCarthy in Dallas, the former Super Bowl winner (Packers, 2010) has been a frequent name tied to NFL openings over the last two head coaching cycles. When longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin stepped down after the season, McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, was automatically tied to the opening.

It’s not yet clear if McCarthy’s new job will mean a reunion with his former Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, who played in 2025 with the Steelers. Rodgers has indicated he could be retiring, though he hasn’t officially made a decision.

Unlike the revolving door of coaches in Dallas, McCarthy will join a rare company in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have had only four coaches going back to the 1960s: Chuck Knoll, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin and, apparently, now McCarthy.
