Former Cowboys cornerback Kelvin Joseph called police and admitted to being involved in the crash, officials said.
DALLAS — Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Kelvin Joseph drove nearly three miles from the scene of a fatal crash with a motorcycle on U.S. 75, then waited almost an hour before calling 911, according to an affidavit.
Police were called to the scene of the crash involving a BMW and a motorcycle on U.S. 75 in Richardson shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday, officials said. The driver, Cody Morris, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, and there was no one else around when officers arrived, police said.
The driver of the BMW, who police later identified as Joseph, continued northbound on U.S. 75 for nearly three miles after the crash before stopping at an auto repair store parking lot in the 1900 block of North Central Expressway in Plano, according to a probable cause affidavit. He waited for nearly 40 minutes before calling 911 and did not render aid to Morris, according to the affidavit.
Officials alleged in the affidavit that Joseph appeared drunk, was leaning against a vehicle, and had slurred speech, the affidavit states.
“Upon initial contact with Joseph, multiple indications of impairment were readily apparent,” the affidavit states. “Joseph had the extremely potent and distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath as he spoke…with low, slow speech. He was also unsteady, often swaying in circular motions as he stood.”
An officer also noticed Joseph’s BMW nearby with damage to the front right wheel area, according to the affidavit.
“The front right wheel was down to just a rim, which was badly damaged,” the affidavit reads.
Joseph told officers questioning him about the crash that he remembered seeing a motorcyclist to the right of his vehicle and that the rider “cut him off” before the crash, according to the affidavit.
In the affidavit, authorities state that Joseph reported no injuries to himself and told officers he waited to stop at the auto repair store because it was where he felt “safest.”
Joseph admitted to drinking two glasses of wine before the crash and denied taking anything else, according to the affidavit.
Once he’d parked at the store, Joseph admitted to calling a relative first, who he said told him to call the police, the affidavit stated.
Joseph was arrested and charged with DWI and collision involving personal injury or death and booked into the Richardson City Jail Saturday afternoon. His bond was set at $25,000 for collision involving death and $1,000 for driving while intoxicated before he posted bond and was released Sunday.
As we previously reported, Joseph was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2021 Draft and spent two seasons with the team. He played for various teams before joining the DC Defenders in the UFL for the 2025 season.
He was previously questioned and cleared in a murder investigation that stemmed from a March 2022 shooting.
