Former East Texas athlete killed in Fort Worth shooting

He was on the Carthage football team that won the 2013 State Championship.

CARTHAGE, Texas — A former East Texas athlete was killed in a shooting Sunday in Fort Worth.

James Lynn Marshall, 28, was found in the backyard of a residence in the 3000 block of Forest Ave. in Fort Worth with gunshot wounds, according to our sister station in Dallas, WFAA. Detectives said he was in a verbal argument with an unknown suspect before gunshots were fired.

Marshall, who was from Carthage, was on the Bulldogs football team. He recorded 252 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries during career at Carthage High School.

At Carthage, he was 2013 and 2014 First Team All-District, 2014 All-East Texas Super Team, 2013 All-State Honorable Mention and 2013 Academic All-District. He was on the Carthage football team that won the 2013 State Championship, according to information on East Texas A&M University’s website.

After high school, he played for East Texas A&M and Mary-Hardin Baylor.

His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Still Waters Cowboy Church in Carthage. Interment will follow in Walker Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a visitation and viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. 

Detectives are investigating Marshall’s death, and no arrests have been made at this time.
