Former Longhorn, NFL quarterback appointed to Texas higher education board

Gov. Abbott announced that he has appointed Colt McCoy to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

AUSTIN, Texas — A former Texas Longhorns quarterback is going to be part of an effort to guide the future of higher education in the Lone Star State.

On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he has appointed Colt McCoy to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. According to the governor’s office, the board provides “leadership and coordination for the Texas higher education system.”

McCoy attended Texas from 2005 until 2009, leading the Longhorns to the BCS National Championship game following the 2009 season. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft played in the NFL for 13 seasons, primarily as a backup, as a member of the Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Washington’s NFL franchise, New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals. He retired following the 2022 season.

Since retiring from professional football, McCoy has worked as a television football analyst in the real estate industry. He is a member of the advisory boards for the Fort Worth Real Estate Center, the University of Texas (UT) Real Estate Center and the UT School of Civic Leadership, as well as being a member of the For Others Advisory Board.

As a member of the board, McCoy will work with the Texas Legislature, businesses and other stakeholders, with the goal of developing higher education in Texas to be in line with the state’s economic and talent needs.

McCoy’s term is set to expire on Aug. 31, 2031.
