Wemby has the skills to be an NBA great, but what will it take for him to enter the conversation?
SAN ANTONIO — Former NBA All-Star Boogie Cousins is making it clear: San Antonio Spurs‘ Victor Wembanyama will be among the NBA’s greatest players.
Speaking with “Run It Back,” the former NBA big man believes the Spurs center will be mentioned among the legends of the league or, at minimum, be considered the most outstanding defensive player.
“At minimum, Wemby will be the greatest defensive player of all time. Minimum. I’m calling that now. The sky’s the limit for this kid,” he said.
Wemby is still in his NBA career’s infancy, but all the signs point to him becoming that generational player many tabs him to become.

He has already shown exceptional skills for his age, with a unique combination of height, size, length, shooting, ball-handling, basketball IQ and defensive capabilities.
“His speed, his length, and the output he gets off the floor make it difficult. You have to make good decisions against him,” said Bulls head coach Billy Donovan.
However, becoming one of the “greatest” does not just involve individual talent; he must show longevity, consistency, leadership and impact on the game.
Of course, the most significant piece he will need to be mentioned among the NBA’s best is winning titles. He’ll likely collect individual accolades like MVP awards, All-Star appearances and more Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Still, without titles, it might be difficult for him to be mentioned among the NBA’s elite when his career ends. Only time will reveal whether he can translate his unique skill set into consistent, championship-level basketball.
His potential is evident, but it’s too early to say he will be one of the greatest.
