Former UTSA Roadrunner Tariq Woolen signs deal with Eagles following Super Bowl win with Seattle, source says

The UTSA alum goes from winning a Super Bowl with the Seahawks in February to signing with the Eagles in March, sources say.

SAN ANTONIO — A former UTSA Roadrunner just signed a contract possibly larger than any alum has signed in the NFL.

Tariq “Riq” Woolen has signed a one-year deal up to $15 million with the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL insider Adam Schefter reports.

Woolen, who attended UTSA from 2017-2021, is fresh off a Super Bowl win with the Seattle Seahawks, the team that drafted him in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

In his rookie year, Woolen led the league in interceptions with six en route to a Pro Bowl appearance as well as getting third place in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

His production has dipped since, and in 16 games last season he recorded one interception and 41 total tackles. In Seattle’s Super Bowl run he recorded eight total tackles and deflected three passes in three games.

In his four years in Seattle, he had 12 interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. His tenure in Seattle was bookended by a Super Bowl win where he had four solo tackles in the championship game.

On Tuesday, Woolen decided to join the Eagles on a one-year deal, the team who won the season before’s Super Bowl. This deal is worth up to $15 million, according to Schefter. He joins a secondary headlined by Cooper DeJean, Quinyon Mitchell and Adoree’ Jackson.

Interestingly, this is Woolen’s third team with a bird as their mascot following the Roadrunners and Seahawks.
