Free Family Fishing Day returns to Brackenridge Park with prizes and lessons

A popular San Antonio event is back this spring, offering free fishing, lessons and family fun along the river.🎣

SAN ANTONIO — A popular San Antonio tradition is expanding, giving families even more chances to enjoy the outdoors together.

The Brackenridge Park Conservancy is launching its inaugural Spring Family Fishing Day on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Joske Pavilion inside Brackenridge Park.

The free event builds on the success of the Conservancy’s fall fishing day and will now take place twice a year.

Families of all ages are invited to fish along the San Antonio River, with no fishing license required.

Organizers say a limited number of loaner fishing poles and light equipment will be available for kids while supplies last.

Youth ages 5 to 16 can also sign up for free angler lessons led by Fin Addict Angler Foundation, teaching safe and responsible fishing practices.

There will also be a friendly competition for young anglers, with prizes awarded for the first fish caught and the biggest catch.

The San Antonio River Authority will be on-site to share information about protecting the local river ecosystem.

Organizers say the goal is to bring families together while encouraging a love for nature and conservation.

The event is free to attend, with registration required for lessons and contests.
