NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week’s Forgotten Friend is Fenrir, a one-year-old terrier mix that was first brought to the Humane Society in New Braunfels (HSNBA) by a good Samaritan back in October 2024. He had been found as a young puppy with his two littermates at a 7-11 store. He was initially adopted right after his neuter surgery, only spending about 10 days at the shelter. But sadly, that home ended up not being the right fit for him and Fenrir returned to the shelter eight months later. The adopter said he was jumping on their 91-year-old father who lived in the home, so it just wasn’t safe.
If you’re wondering where the name came from, Fenrir was a gigantic wolf from Norse mythology. Fenrir was the monstrous child of Loki and Angrboða, prophesied to kill the chief god Odin during Ragnarök, the end of the world.
But this Fenrir is just a big puppy at heart, even though he weighs in at 66 pounds.
“The adopters said that while Fenrir was a good dog, they just did not have the time to dedicate to his training and correcting his jumping behavior,” said Zac Turley, Director of Community Engagement at HSNBA.
Since then, the shelter has worked with him on his “jumpy” behavior. A volunteer said that Fenrir “doesn’t jump on me anymore when I enter his kennel and even sits politely.”
“Other volunteers have noted that he does have a lot of energy, but that he listens well when corrected, especially when you are consistent with him,” said Zac. “While Fenrir’s jumpy behavior has significantly improved, he still needs an adopter who is willing to continue working with him and building on the progress he has made since returning to HSNBA.”
Fenrir gets along great with other dogs, and is in fact, a regular at doggy playgroups and pack walk programs, where he gets to interact with other dogs in a structured setting. It doesn’t matter the size or the play-style, he makes it work. He has not had an opportunity to be around cats yet, so that is an unknown.
“We think Fenrir would do well in a home with another dog, and our staff would facilitate a meet and greet with an adopter’s dog before adoption to help ensure a good match,” said Zac.
Because he does have a lot of energy to burn, a home with kids (over the age of 10) would be ideal. He needs to have people who are ready to help him channel his energy and give him the training he needs to grow into a happy dog.
“Fenrir is a strong, high-energy boy looking for a home that can keep up,” said Zac. “He’s a big, athletic dog who loves to run, explore, and stay on the move—a great fit for someone who enjoys an active lifestyle and fast-paced walks.”
He can be a little vocal and excitable, especially when he has energy to burn. He does pull a little when on a leash and would benefit from continued training. He already knows some basic commands and will listen to correction. With a little structure and consistency, he has a lot of potential.
Fenrir is a fan of treats but his favorite thing is just attention and love from his people.
Fenrir is up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and already neutered. In fact, he is really healthy and doesn’t have any special needs.
“Fenrir is ready to give a family a lifetime of laughter, love, and many happy memories,” said Zac. “He just needs someone who is prepared to help him stay physically enriched through walks, backyard time, and basic training.”
Do you have what it takes to keep up with this dog with energy to burn?
You can submit your application for Fenrir right here: https://www.hsnba.org/adopt/adopt-a-dog/.

“Each year, our Executive Director and Board of Directors work hard to create a reasonable and practical budget for the following year. During the fall of 2024, we looked at the last 4 years of donations and made the conservative estimate that we would collect $575,000 in donations in 2025. However, to date, HSNBA has only collected just under $200,000 in monetary donations and we are quickly going into the RED.” says Sarah Hammond, the Executive Director at HSNBA.
